Anti-drugs Sangrur cycle rally draws huge public response
Sangrur, July 23, 2017: The call for participation in the anti-drugs cycle rally organized jointly by the District Police and Sangrur Cycling Club on Sunday drew huge public response. About five kilometers long rally was attended by MLAs of different political parties, top officers of the Police and civil administration and thousands of people,
Deputy Commissioner Amarpartap Singh Virk and SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu released balloons and pigeons to convey the message of peace. MLAs from Sangrur, Dhuri, Sunam and Dirba Vijay Inder Singla,Dalvir Goldy, Aman Arora and Harpal Singh Cheema also participated.
MLA Singla formally flagged off the rally which passed through Badrukha, Mastuana Sahib, Police Lines, Mahavir Chowk, Chhota Chowk, Barra Chowk, Patiala Gate, Fuhara Chowk, Milk Plant before culminating at Golden Valley Palace.
There were arrangements of drinking water enroute. The social organizations welcomed the rally by showering flower petals on the rallyists all along the 16.5 kilometres long route.
MLA Singla appreciated the large participation in the rally and said the state government was taking large-scale measures to eradicate menace of drugs. MLA Goldy expressed hope the positive results of anti-drug drive launched in the state would soon be seen on the ground. MLAs Arora and Cheema emphasized on need to initiate such anti-drugs initiative in other districts as well.
The participants were given certificates by IG Patiala Zone AS Rai, DIG Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill and SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu. Free T-shirts displaying motto of the rally were also distributed. The enthusiastic young participants were seen taking selfies.
SSP Sidhu said the encouraging response to the rally showed the people’ willingness to support the anti-drugs drive started by the Punjab government and the police. The organizers were highly encouraged by the participation of about 7000 people in the rally.
Encouraged by the public response, the police will soon decide on the next programme of organizing another such rally, said SSP Sidhu.
